Acupuncture

This type of treatment may be recommended or requested to assist
with the relief of Musculo-skeletal or nerve pain.

The benefits of acupuncture frequently include more than just relief from a particular condition. Many people find that it can also lead to increased energy levels, better appetite and sleep as well as an enhanced sense of overall well being.

Electrotherapy

Ultrasound, Interferential or TNS may be administered to assist with pain or swelling.

Some of the main electrotherapy methods are listed below:

  • Shortwave diathermy - produces an electromagnetic field which generates heat within tissues. This helps healing, reduces swelling and offers pain relief. It is useful for treating soft tissue injuries, slow healing wounds, sinusitis and conditions affecting the pelvic area.
  • Ultrasound - involves using high frequency sound waves to treat injuries to muscles, tendons and other soft tissues. It is thought to stimulate blood circulation and cell activity, accelerating the healing process and providing pain relief.
  • Laser - is used to produce a concentrated beam of light radiation. Treatment stimulates tissue healing and reduces pain, inflammation and swelling. It is often used for skin conditions and soft tissue injuries and to heal open wounds.
  • TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) - produces pain relief by blocking pain messages to the brain.

Manipulation

Spinal joints may be manipulated or mobilised to relieve stiffness and pain.

Manipulation as performed by a Chartered Physiotherapist is usually a gentle, non violent hands on form of physio treatment and is effective in treating both spinal and peripheral joints, often in conjunction with some other form of physio treatment eg. massage and/or and remedial exercise programme.

Soft Tissue Massage

This may be needed to relieve tension and spasm in the muscles and connective tissues.

Is one of the manual techniques often employed by a Physiotherapist and is one of the hands on skills that are used by a physio in conjunction with other modalities of treatment. Whilst massage is frequently utilised to mobilise soft tissue injuries eg. muscle strain, tennis elbow and ligamentous injuries, this form of physio is also an effective adjunct when used as a pre-curser to manipulation treatment for both spinal and peripheral joint problems.

Exercise and Rehabilitation

Home exercise programmes, posture advice and sport specific rehabilitation is offered.

These programmes are just as vital as physiotherapy treatment during the journey to full recovery.
